A secret organization, run from New York City, Clan na Gael was the key source of American-based strategy and support behind the Irish successful independence movement in the last century.

The Clan was led by diverse figures—now considered patriots—like John Devoy, Joseph McGarrity, Daniel Cohalan and Mike Quill.
